Wine festival in Ahrweiler Germany

Hi there!

So last weekend was a blast. My family, Chris and I went to Ahrweiler in Germany. It is like less than two hours away from where we live so the ride over there was pretty short. Over there we stayed in this big, beautiful and modern house (first picture below). It had a lot of bedrooms and bathrooms which was a plus because we could all basically shower at the same time! My sister found a house on this website www.airbnb.com which is great website for when you are looking for a house to rent for a trip!

The first day we hungout a bit in the house, ate some pumpkin bread with cream cheese icing (nom nom nom) and after that we went for a nice walk with the dogs because Rosco came along with us and so did my parents dog, Lieske. Ahrweiler is a pretty small town in Germany and is well known for it's wine fields. It’s also a popular vacation spot for elderly, who we saw A LOT.

Walking from the house to Ahrweiler isn’t far at all. It was a nice walk cause you walked through this big park which had its romantic spots. QUE the romantic pictures! Credit goes to my sister, Danielle.

So on day two we walked through the park again and this until we hit up Ahrweiler. On the walk over there we noticed it getting busier and busier and not only with elderly but other young(ish) tourists as well. Like I said Ahrweiler is known for the wine fields and so on the second day being there, there was a wine festival. YES a wine festival with all the goody goods of good tasting wine! The wine festival was being held at the town square and walking towards that you got greeted with all these pretty and somewhat medieval looking houses. I took a few pictures of some wall art some of the houses had. It was a really cool thing to see.

BUT back to the wine festival. At the town square you got welcomed by a lot of stands with typical German food and wine. GOOD wine may I add. You could buy wine to drink and with that you got this nice wineglass with the word Ahrweiler and the date on it.

The thing you could do with the glass at festival makes this whole trip even better. Believe me. There was a parade going on as well and during that parade there were different marching bands playing, there were these wine princesses and queens. There was even a wine god and the whole thing looked really awesome.

But during the parade you could get FREE wine, the local wine. Everybody walking in that parade had a bottle of wine and if you stood upfront or close to it and held out your wine glass, they would poor in some wine for you to enjoy. You could keep on doing that until the parade was over. Don’t do that though, drinking too much is never good.

Another local thing you could do at Ahrweiler was trying the first wine. This wine isn’t bottled yet like the bottles in the store and this wine is so sweet because it is the product of fermented freshly pressed grape juice, known as must. This wine is so new that it still has a lot of sugars in it and even the liquid looks cloudy because of it. This wine is called federweisser.

After this amazing day in Ahrweiler we walked back to the house and ate some good ol’ schnitzel and enjoyed some federweisser. The next day was our last day and so we slept in, ate breakfast and visited Ahrweiler one more time to see the wine fields up close.

This was such a fun trip and I’m really happy that I could visit it together with Chris and my family. I really like showing Chris all these cool things you could do in Europe and might not be able to see or do in the States. BTW I got this cake recipe from Ahrweiler which involves red wine!! If you want to see more about that please leave a comment below!
