We got a dog!

So when Chris and I decided to get a dog we took our time to look at what kind of dog we wanted. We wanted a dog that wasn't too big or too small. Somewhat like a Beagle size, it's a perfect fit in our current house.

What was also important for us was a dog that could live with cats. We thought about getting a puppy because you could train it so it could live with cats. We ended up going to different animal shelters. Not to get a dog right away but to see what they had to offer. The first animal shelter we went to is also the same animal shelter where we got Gemma and Whisky from. The people over there are really nice and what I personally liked was that they would help you to find a dog that would fit your needs.

We had to fill in some forms and only after that they would let you look at the dogs. This prevented it from getting to busy for the animals. While talking to this nice lady and getting some information, there was this one dog that caught Chris's eye. It was a medium sized dog that was rescued from people who were hurting her. Chris had a connection with the dog but sadly enough we couldn't adopt her. The dog was staying there until the police figured out if she could go for adoption or not but the lady who worked there said it would always take really long. We told them that we would keep her in our minds and continued looking at other animal shelters.

There was another animal shelter we went to but to be honest we weren't big fans. I didn't liked how the dogs where locked up and also the people who worked there weren't necessarily friendly or helpful. You could just walk there and look at the dogs, there wasn't any special procedure like the other animal shelter had and so you could definitaly tell the difference on how the animals were acting around people. I don't think they had a bad life over there but to us it didn't felt comfortable. So after that we went to a place in the Netherlands where they would rescue dogs and puppies from countries all around the world. The place is called Poor Animal stichting (foundation). Over there they have a bunch of dogs all sizes and shapes and ofcourse different mixed breeds. The dogs were treated well and had a lot of space to walk around. Because they walked around loose, they all acted very social towards each other. I personally think that's a good thing.

So it was difficult to choose a dog, they all looked so sweet and I wish I could give them all a nice home, but that is just not possible. Luckily, I caught the attention of this medium sized, very happy and friendly dog. I knew immediately that THAT was our dog. Chris wasn't sure yet but after the dog almost got adopted in front of our eyes, we knew we had to act quickly. So we adopted Benny who is now called Rosco (after Roscoe P. Coltrane, the sheriff on the TV series "Dukes Of Hazzard"). We are not sure what kind of breed he is so if you know, leave a comment below!

So how is Rosco doing so far you might ask? He is doing amazing! He is a 5 month old pup rescued from Bulgaria. He is a real cuddle dog and loves to play. He acts friendly around the cats and the cats don't really seem to care much about him. Since he's a pup he needs to learn a lot of stuff but he's a smart cookie and learns really quickly. So far he knows how to sit, lay down and give a paw. I talk dutch and english to him but when we train im only talking english so I use english commands, making it easier for Chris to practice with Rosco as well.

These are the websites of the first animal shelter and the poor animal foundation!
